Turkish main opposition party leader to visit Somalia

A delegation from Turkey’s main opposition party headed by the party’s chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu, will pay a visit to famine-stricken Somalia, as Turkish people have so far collected a total of 393.39 million Turkish liras ($225 million) in donations for Somalia

A delegation from Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), headed by the party’s chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu, will pay a visit to famine-stricken Somalia.

After attending Victory Day celebrations in Turkey on Tuesday, the CHP delegation will depart for Somalia after midnight in order to monitor the latest developments in this country on site and to distribute various humanitarian aid materials to the Somalis in need.

As part of the visit, Kilicdaroglu and the accompanying delegation are set to visit Dadaab Refugee Camp on the Kenyan-Somali border on the second day of the Feast of Ramadan where they will meet with camp officials, as well as Somali community leaders and citizens.

Kilicdaroglu’s visit is expected to be covered by a crowded group of journalists.

Meanwhile, a deputy chairperson for CHP said that a delegation from his party would also pay a visit to Syria after the Feast of Ramadan.

393.4 million TL for Somalia

Turkish people have so far collected a total of 393.39 million Turkish liras ($225 million) in donations for Somalia, the Turkish Prime Ministry Disaster & Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) announced on Monday.

As of 12 p.m. today, AFAD has collected 86.5 million TL and Turkish Religious Affairs Authority has collected 142 million TL, as 164.89 million TL has been collected in several other campaigns launched across the country, AFAD said.

Turkey has recently initiated a country-wide aid campaign to help Somalia. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Mogadishu and several refugee camps in the country, pledging more aid in cash and infrastructure.

Turkey has so far sent 8 planes and 4 ships of humanitarian relief supplies to famine-stricken Somalia.
