ABD Kongresindeki borç tavanını yükseltme müzakarelerinin tıkandığı anlarda ABD Başkanı Barack Obama, Amerikan halkına çağrıda bulunarak Kongre üyelerine baskı yapmaya davet etti. Obama, baskının nasıl yapılacağı ile ilgili bazı metodları da anarken özel bir sosyal ağı da andı: ‘’Telefon açın, e-mail gönderin, Tweet edin’’. Bazı internet uzmanları Obama’nın, ‘’Facebook’tan mesaj atın demek yerine Tweet edin demesini ‘’Twitter’a büyük bir destek ve Facebook’a kötü bir haber’ olarak yorumladı.
ABD Kongre üyelerinin çoğu Twitter hesabını kendi kampanyaları için ‘tek taraflı’ olarak kullanıyor. Gerçi Kongre’nin ilk Müslüman üyesi Minnesota milletvekili Keith Ellison gibi Twitter hesabında takipçileriyle hararetli sohbetlere girenler de var.
